Uses of Pen drive

Pen Drive Definition:-
A USB flash drive, also known as a thumb drive, pen drive, flash drive, memory stick, USB stick, or USB memory, is a data storage device that includes flash memory with an integrated USB interface.
 What is Pen Drive:-
It is usually removable, re-writable
and much smaller than optical discs. Most weigh less than 30 grams. Based on the Universal Serial Bus mass storage standard, USB flash drives are supported by all operating systems and BIOS. Compared to optical disk drives and floppy disks, USB flash drives can store more data and transfer it to fast speed.
The pen drive is nothing but a portable storage space device capable of taking care of your storage needs. Of course, in the earlier days, these devices were not able to store more than a hundred megabytes, but now, as technology has grown and is getting more and more complex, a pen drive can easily reach 120 GB and even more can store data.
The most impressive thing is that you will not need to carry a large external hard drive - you can store this information on a piece of plastic that is as big as your thumb nail.
Now, it is also notable that most pen drives are going to use flash technology. What is a flash pen drive? It is a USB storage device that takes advantage of a non-volatile device that is capable of storing your data even when it is not power sourced. However, it is also worth noting that the majority of currently produced pen drives are taking advantage of flash storage technology. Today specialized technology companies are working to improve pen drives and are trying to eliminate issues limiting its use. Many improvements have been made to the basic USB drive. We can use USB 3.0 pen drives nowadays, although USB 2.0's previous compatibility remains, and theoretically has a data transfer rate of up to 640 Mbps which is ten times faster than USB 2.0. Practically USB 3.0 pen drives with speeds up to 120 Mbps are readily available in the market. However for small files, this is limited to its actual speed of 10%.

USES OF PEN DRIVE:-
What are the uses of a pen drive?
USB flash drives are often used for the same purposes for which floppy disks or CDs were used; That is, storage, data back up and transfer of computer files. They are smaller, faster, have thousands of times more capacity, and are more durable and reliable because they have no moving parts.

Usage of USB pen drive
1) TRANSPORT:-
The most common use of USB pen drives is to transport or store personal files such as documents, pictures and videos.
2) COMPUTER REPAIR:-
USB pen drives are heavily used in the PC repair sector, such as installing antivirus software on PCs, Windows recovery, troubleshooting etc.
3) CARRY APPLICATIONS:-
USB pen drives are used to carry applications running on the host computer without the need for installation. Along with this, many applications of education are distributed from the pen drive itself.
4) AS AUDIO PLAYERS:-
Many companies make solid state digital audio players in a small form factor. The MP3 playback function is the most popular for USB pen drives. Some of them also have an LCD display and audio input jack and a rechargeable battery for browsing the track.
5) BOOT OPERATING SYSTEMS:-
Today most PC firmware allows booting from a USB drive, allowing you to boot PUSI from your pen drive. You can also perform OS recovery by creating recovery media.
6) OPERATING SYSTEM INSTALLATION:-
Many operating systems can be installed from Pen drive. You can install Windows 7, Windows 8, Linux, Mac OS etc. from a pen drive.
 7) BACKUP:-
Today pen drives are also used as backup.
A pen drive usually consists of a printed circuit board with a USB connector, power circuitry, and several integrated circuits (IC). One of these ICs on the PCB provides an interface between the memory and the USB connector.

The IC is next to a NAND flash memory where all files are stored. Pen drives or USB flash drives use PCBs as a means of transferring data and power from USB. The controller chip is considered the brain of the pen drive. The picture below shows the internal structure of the USB flash drive.
